Is vaping worse for you than smoking a cigarette?

E-cigarettes heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco), flavors and other chemicals to create an aerosol that is inhaled. Common tobacco cigarettes contain 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. The long-term health effects of e-cigarettes are not yet well understood. However, science clearly indicates that vaping is not a safe or healthy alternative to smoking.

We will continue to support research on the health consequences of this and other trends related to tobacco products in order to attract a new generation of consumers. Neither smoking nor vaping are beneficial to human health. Based on available evidence, smoking seems more harmful than vaping, but this doesn't mean that vaping is safe. Vaping involves inhaling an aerosol containing several chemicals, such as nicotine and flavorings, through an electronic cigarette or a vaporizer.
